Tap Kit: iPhone NFC wallet SDK for UK challenger banks and credit unions
White-label iPhone tap-to-pay wallet for smaller UK issuers if the CMA opens NFC. Issuers pay per active card.
Competitive · CMA consults on opening iPhone contactless
Written for: Small startup team
Next step
Call the head of cards at a UK credit-union service organisation and ask what they pay Apple per transaction today and whether they would back an own-brand wallet if the CMA opens NFC.
Why now
Nothing is buildable for UK issuers until the CMA decides. Smaller issuers will not build an NFC wallet in-house, so an SDK reused from the EU entitlement model is the obvious wedge once rules are final.
What became possible
The CMA is consulting on lower fees and fewer technical barriers for Apple Pay rivals using iPhone contactless. That would let issuers build their own tap wallets in the UK, as the EU already allows.
One way in
- Issuer wallet SDK
Card provisioning, tokenisation hooks and tap flow packaged as an SDK that a small issuer drops into its existing app.
- Customer
- Head of cards at a UK credit union or small challenger bank
- Model
- Setup fee plus monthly fee per active card
Competition
The core technology already exists. Entrust, Thales and IDEMIA sell iPhone issuer-wallet SDKs in the EU, and Vipps MobilePay and Curve Pay are live there.
Full competition notes (6 competitors)
The core technology already exists. Entrust, Thales and IDEMIA sell iPhone issuer-wallet SDKs in the EU, and Vipps MobilePay and Curve Pay are live there. So a new entrant can't win on being first with the technology in Europe. The UK itself is still open: per press coverage, no rival wallet has launched there yet. The incumbents also sell big, enterprise-style integrations to large banks. What I found no evidence of is a drop-in, pay-per-active-card SDK for UK credit unions and small challenger banks. The way to win is to be ready on the first day the UK opens, perhaps by selling through a small-issuer card processor rather than bank by bank. The risks are serious. The whole idea depends on the CMA's final ruling and on Apple not overturning it in court. Getting certified with Visa and Mastercard to create and manage card tokens is expensive. Few UK credit unions issue their own cards; most rely on outside card processors, which could bundle Entrust or Thales instead. And at credit-union volumes, per-card fees may not cover the cost of certification.
- Entrust NFC Issuer Wallet for iOS (incl. Antelop)
Launched February 2025 as a way for European banks to build an iPhone tap-to-pay wallet inside their own banking app, alongside Apple Pay. Piloting with several large European banks. Entrust bought Antelop, a white-label wallet company with more than 40 bank customers, and has offered the equivalent on Android since 2016. This is essentially the proposed product, aimed at bigger banks.
- Thales digital wallet platform (powers Vipps MobilePay)
Powers Vipps MobilePay, described as the first third-party iPhone tap-to-pay app (December 2024), with Visa and Mastercard support added later. Thales markets its wallet platform to issuers.
- IDEMIA Tap & Pay
Tap-to-pay product for iOS and Android sold to wallet providers and issuers.
- Curve Pay
London-based consumer wallet, not an SDK. Offers iPhone tap-to-pay in the EEA since May 2025. One source claims UK availability but I could not confirm it. Banks' cards could flow through it as an alternative to an issuer-branded wallet.
- Apple NFC & SE Platform
Apple's current UK route for third-party iPhone tap-to-pay, using the phone's secure chip. Requires a commercial agreement with Apple, its approval and fees. This is the baseline the CMA is trying to loosen.
- CMA NFC access proposals (regulatory context)
Published 20 October 2026, consultation closes 17 November 2026. Would require Apple to give access through software card emulation (HCE) or its secure chip. One outlet, citing the FT, says Apple is preparing a court challenge.

Risks
- Consultation outcome and timing are uncertain
- Token-service and certification work with the card networks is slow
- Existing EU vendors will extend into the UK first
