Swarm Check: does your multi-agent setup beat one agent on your own tasks?

Harness that replays your tasks through solo and team agent configs, reporting pass rate and spend; agent builders pay.

Competitive · Vals: agent teams 5.1x cost

Written for: Solo builder

Next step

This week, run a stock CrewAI team against a single agent on 20 graded coding tasks, five runs each, and publish cost and pass rate with intervals. Then offer free runs on users' own tasks in the CrewAI and LangChain Discords and r/LocalLLaMA.

Why now

What changed since Bill Replay: that card compared models on cost per task. Today's evidence says the bigger saving for many teams is agent count, not model choice. Builders who copied swarm templates (CrewAI, LangGraph, bots like Bops) have no cheap way to test whether to cut back to one agent. Cheaper tokens are driving more demand, so the waste compounds.

What became possible

Vals AI found agent teams cost up to 5.1x more than solo agents. Only one of four tests with GPT-6 Sol and Claude Opus 5.5 showed a measurable gain, and Anthropic's own data shows quality flat beyond ten agents. Separately, a run-to-run variance study found 0.07% to 10.2% of outputs flip at temperature 0. So one comparison run proves nothing; you need repeats and intervals.

Two ways in

  1. swarmcheck CLI

Wraps an existing multi-agent config and a solo baseline, replays a task set five or more times each, and prints pass rate with intervals, tokens and dollars per completed task

    Customer
Developers running CrewAI, LangGraph or OpenAI Agents SDK in production
    Model
Open-source CLI; $49/month hosted runs with history and a shareable report
  2. Swarm audit

A fixed-price one-week audit for agencies that sold multi-agent builds to clients: here is the solo config that matches quality at a fifth of the cost

    Customer
    AI automation agencies
    Model
    $750 per audit

Competition

Competitive

No product was found that is built specifically to replay a user's own tasks through a multi-agent config and a budget-matched solo baseline and return a statistically grounded verdict with dollars per completed task. General eval platforms such as Braintrust, LangSmith, Orq Evaluatorq, Osmosis and Maxim can each be set up to do this, and research papers and practitioner posts already recommend the method, so the plumbing is commoditized.

A new entrant could win on a narrow, one-command CLI that reads existing CrewAI, LangGraph or OpenAI Agents SDK team configs, generates a fair solo baseline automatically, runs repeated trials and states plainly whether the team earns its cost. The audit could also work as a sales wedge. The risks are that any big eval platform could add a solo-baseline template cheaply, that agencies have weak incentives to pay for proof they oversold a build (their clients or in-house teams are likelier buyers), and that most teams lack pass/fail checks for their tasks, so building those checks may be most of the actual work.

  • Braintrust

General agent eval platform with experiment comparison and integrations for LangGraph, CrewAI and OpenAI Agents SDK; can compare a solo config with a team config but has no solo-vs-team workflow.

  • LangSmith

LangChain's eval and observability platform; runs experiments on datasets, compares results and tracks cost. Generic, not solo-vs-team.

  • Orq.ai Evaluatorq

Runs multiple jobs or agents against the same dataset and compares them side by side; works with LangGraph and CrewAI.

  • Osmosis benchmarks

Benchmark runs with multiple attempts per task, reporting pass@1 and pass@k with 95% confidence intervals; close to the statistical output proposed.

  • Maxim

Agent simulation and eval platform with native LangGraph, OpenAI Agents SDK and CrewAI integrations.

  • Galileo (via Lyzr roundup of multi-agent eval tools)

Multi-agent evaluation with agentic metrics, handoff scoring and per-agent failure attribution; aimed at debugging teams rather than proving a solo agent is enough.

  • At Equal Inference Cost, Multi-Agent Structure Does Not Beat a Single Frozen Agent (arXiv)

Research evidence that budget-matched solo agents match or beat teams; supports the thesis and shows the method is known.

  • Terminal Agents Suffice for Enterprise Automation (arXiv)

Compares a single agent with a planner-executor team; the team was barely better or no better, at higher cost per task.

  • Iinix AI Workflow Audit

Fixed-fee AI workflow audit from $2,500 plus AgentOps retainers with cost control; not specifically solo-vs-team.

  • Main & Machine AI Readiness Audit

    Fixed-price $3,500 to $8,500 audit; general readiness, not a multi-agent downsizing service.

  • Upwork AI Agent Cost Audit gig

Freelancer cost audit from $100 recommending cheaper model routing; shows demand for agent cost audits at low price points.

Risks

  • Braintrust, LangSmith or Vals add a solo-vs-team comparison mode
  • Many users have no graders for their tasks, so pass rate is hard to define
  • Results may come out 'it depends', which is harder to sell

Strong tech readiness and team fit; open space is the weak point (5).
