Mint Watch: independent supply checks for every asset an exchange lists

Recalculates each listed chain's and token's total supply from on-chain data and alerts on coins that appear from nowhere. Exchanges and custodians pay.

Next step

Call the head of digital-asset risk at Kraken or Coinbase and ask what they would have seen, and how fast, if someone had exploited the XRPL bug before it was patched.

Why now

The XRP Ledger just patched a decade-old bug that could have created billions of XRP from nothing. Ledger is investigating possible wallet tampering after reports of $86M stolen. Cryptographers are openly putting odds on losing confidence in public-key schemes. Exchanges credit deposits from chains they don't control, so a minting exploit ends up as their loss.

What became possible

AI now reads and reverse-engineers old code at scale; hundreds of games were decompiled in weeks. Long-lived bugs in ledger and wallet code will be found faster by both defenders and attackers. A check that the total supply adds up is a cheap, chain-agnostic way to catch an exploit early.

Two ways in

  1. Supply Invariant Monitor

For each listed asset, recalculate total supply from raw chain data every block or epoch and compare it with what the protocol says it should be. Alert listing and treasury teams to any gap that can't be explained.

  2. Deposit Breaker

Competitive

The large security vendors (Hypernative, Chainalysis Hexagate, Forta) already market abnormal-mint detection for listed tokens to exchanges, including webhooks and automated responses. A general "mint alert for exchanges" product would compete head on with well-funded incumbents.

Full competition notes (8 competitors)

The large security vendors (Hypernative, Chainalysis Hexagate, Forta) already market abnormal-mint detection for listed tokens to exchanges, including webhooks and automated responses. A general "mint alert for exchanges" product would compete head on with well-funded incumbents. Their detection mostly watches EVM contract events and behaviour, though. None of them publicly offers independent recalculation of supply from raw chain data, checked against each protocol's issuance rules, for every asset an exchange lists. The closest example of that, ForkMonitor, covers only Bitcoin. Unauthorized mints still go unnoticed for long stretches: the Axelar/Secret Network flaw that let an attacker mint from nothing ran for seven days in June 2026, and Hyperbridge minted 1 billion bridged DOT in April 2026. That suggests contract-level monitoring misses forged mints of bridged tokens and inflation bugs in native coins. A new entrant could win by being a neutral, auditable supply checker that covers non-EVM chains and less-common assets (UTXO, Cosmos, Substrate, Move chains). For bridged assets it would check each wrapped supply against what's locked on the source chain, and it would plug directly into exchange deposit crediting as a circuit breaker with an audit log. I could not confirm any vendor ships that breaker ready-made. The risk is that Hypernative or Hexagate add native-supply checks as a feature, so chain coverage and speed of integration have to be the moat.

  • Hypernative (Exchanges & Custodians)

Sold to centralized exchanges and custodians. Says it continuously monitors listed tokens for exploits, governance attacks and abnormal minting, and its Screening & Intelligence product sends webhooks when risk changes for listed or held tokens. Also offers automated responses such as pausing contracts. The closest direct competitor, though detection is based on events and behaviour rather than independently recalculating supply.

  • Hypernative (Issuers)

Pitched as protecting supply integrity for issuers: watches mint and burn controllers across chains for unauthorized minting and role changes. Sold to issuers rather than exchanges, but the technology is the same.

  • Chainalysis Hexagate

Marketplace listing says it detects excessive minting or burning and abnormal transfers, and offers automated security actions. Deployed across protocols, exchanges and asset managers. Coinbase reportedly relies on it for on-chain security.

  • Forta Stablecoin Threat Detection Kit

Open, decentralized detection bots, including one that alerts on mint and borrow anomalies. Focused on EVM tokens, and checks mint activity statistically rather than reconciling supply.

  • Goldsky treasury and reserves solution

Documents a pipeline that indexes mint, burn and supply-cap events, compares on-chain supply with custodian reserves on a schedule, and alerts or pauses when backing drops. A toolkit for building the reconciliation, not a finished product for exchanges.

  • Chainlink SecureMint policy / Proof of Reserve

Preventive check on the issuer side: rejects any mint that would push supply above what the Proof of Reserve feed shows. Covers only tokens that adopt it.

  • ForkMonitor (BitMEX Research)

Open-source, Bitcoin-only. Totals the UTXO set every block and compares it with expected issuance to catch unexpected inflation. The clearest existing example of the supply-invariant idea, but limited to one chain.

  • Elliptic stablecoin supply monitoring

Covers monitoring of USDT and USDC treasury, mint and burn flows, including supply changes that don't match authorized minting. Part of an analytics and compliance offering, not a supply recalculation engine.

Risks

  • Rare events make it hard to sell on return on investment
  • Chain-analytics incumbents can add the check
  • Running nodes for many chains adds cost
  • Legitimate minting and burning mechanics cause false alarms
