Meta and Apple make the Mac a home for open frontier weights
Muse Spark Open on Apple silicon and Nvidia's 4GB–24GB Nemotron models let Mac apps skip API bills.

Next step
Check the Hugging Face model cards for memory needs and licences, then run Bolt E4B against 50 of your own receipts through MLX or llama.cpp and measure field accuracy. Post the numbers on r/macapps to gauge demand.
Why now
Model vendors are now tuning releases for specific consumer hardware, which turns Macs and 24GB GPUs into places to ship real products. That's a tailwind for Apple's hardware story and pressure on per-token API pricing. For a solo builder it means native apps with a capable multimodal model and no inference cost. It's a watch because the full 816B model needs a very large-memory Mac, and Meta's earlier Muse Wonder benchmarks didn't match developer tests.
What became possible
Meta released Muse Spark Open, an 816B-total, 42B-active open-weight multimodal mixture-of-experts model, built with Apple to run locally on Apple silicon. The same day, Nvidia shipped Nemotron 3.5 Super VL (120B), Bolt 74B-A9B sized for 24GB, and Bolt E4B for 4GB. Microsoft unveiled MAI-Base-2.
One way in
- Receipt Shoebox
Mac app that reads receipt and invoice photos with a local multimodal model, files them by client and tax category, and exports CSV. Nothing leaves the machine.
- Customer
- Freelancers and sole traders on Macs
- Model
- $29 one-off on the Mac App Store or Gumroad
Competition
Several Mac apps already promise local, private receipt handling with tax categories. SecureMyReceipts and ReceiptMatrix both claim local processing and tax categories, and Receipts Space is the established local-first Mac app using OCR and a category classifier.
Full competition notes (8 competitors)
Several Mac apps already promise local, private receipt handling with tax categories. SecureMyReceipts and ReceiptMatrix both claim local processing and tax categories, and Receipts Space is the established local-first Mac app using OCR and a category classifier. None of them clearly offers the full combination of a capable multimodal model running on the machine, filing by client as a core feature and clean CSV export. SecureMyReceipts is still in beta and ReceiptMatrix is unproven. The open-source projects (LocalReceiptAI, PaperCortex, invoice-extractor) are for technical users. A new entrant could win by being the polished, accurate Mac app built on the new open models, organised around clients and with exports that go straight into accounting tools and spreadsheets. To stand out it would likely need the best accuracy on messy or foreign-language receipts, tax categories for countries beyond the IRS ones, or direct exports to tools like QuickBooks, Xero or FreeAgent. The risk is that the main rivals already make similar privacy and local-AI claims, and the same open models make it easy for Receipts Space and others to add this quickly, so privacy on its own will not be enough.
- SecureMyReceipts (cebas)
The closest match. It says it uses 100% private local AI on the Mac, auto-assigns tax categories and syncs iPhone captures to the Mac for processing. It needs Apple Silicon and 16GB of RAM, and the macOS version is still in beta. CSV export is not confirmed.
- ReceiptMatrix
A Mac-only App Store app with no ratings yet. It says everything runs locally, pulls out vendor, date and amount, suggests IRS tax categories and makes PDF summaries mapped to Schedule C.
- Receipts Space
The established Mac app, with a paid version at about 59.99 euros. It reads amounts, dates, taxes and IBANs with OCR, stores everything locally, syncs through your own folders and learns to assign contacts and categories. Its listings do not mention an AI model doing the reading.
- Simple Receipts: Expense & Tax
Runs on M1 Macs and uses AI for extraction and categorisation. It does not say whether processing happens on the machine.
- Receipt Scanner – Tax Export
Aimed at freelancers, works offline and exports CSV, but it is built for iPhone and Mac support is not verified.
- LocalReceiptAI
An open-source developer project that processes receipts on the local machine for freelancers and outputs CSV. It is not a polished Mac app.
- PaperCortex
An open-source add-on for the Paperless-ngx document archive. It uses local models through Ollama to pull vendor, date, amount, tax and line items from receipts and can match them to bank transactions. It is aimed at self-hosters.
- invoice-extractor
An MIT-licensed GitHub project that uses a local Gemma model through Ollama to extract structured data from invoices and receipts. It has no stars yet.

Risks
- Memory requirements for Muse Spark Open may exclude most Macs
- Check the licence terms for commercial apps
- Real-world quality may trail benchmark claims, as with Muse Wonder
