Invoice Sense: does this invoice fit this business, checked on every payment
Flags invoices whose goods, prices or routes don't fit the payer's business. FCA-registered EMIs and payment fintechs pay.
Early · FT laundering case + cheap 5B parsers

Next step
Call the MLRO at a mid-size FCA-authorised EMI that handles B2B cross-border payments. Ask what share of last quarter's payments had an invoice attached, and who actually read them.
Why now
The FT reports that the Kremlin-backed A7 network moved money through an FCA-registered London fintech. The cover was a forged invoice for 'cashmere sewing fabric'. Every UK EMI's MLRO will be asked whether this could happen to them. Today, invoice-backed payments are checked by manual sampling, if at all. Cheap parsing plus decision models make it affordable to check every one.
What became possible
Small open parsing models now turn invoice PDFs into structured JSON (line items, tables, amounts) cheaply enough to run on-prem: Youtu-Parsing-Omni (5B) and LightOnOCR-3-4B. Open decision models can then score typed questions like 'does a ventilation-parts wholesaler buy cashmere fabric?' in one forward pass. Clef-flash is now priced below Jev, and H2O-Lightning-4B is Apache-2.0.
Two ways in
- Plausibility API
Send an invoice and the payer's KYB profile. Get back a score with reasons: goods versus the payer's SIC code, unit price versus trade reference ranges, and shipping route versus sanctioned or high-risk corridors.
- Customer
- Compliance teams at UK and EU EMIs and B2B cross-border payment firms
- Model
- Per-invoice pricing with a monthly minimum, deployed on-prem or in a single-tenant cloud
- Invoice lookback
A fixed-fee batch run over the last 12 months of invoices on file. It produces a ranked list of payments where the goods don't fit the business, for the MLRO to review.
- Customer
- EMIs preparing for FCA visits or answering a Dear CEO letter
- Model
- Fixed-fee engagement that converts to the API
Competition
Tools that check invoices for trade-based money laundering are mature but built for banks. Pelican, LSEG, Lloyd's List, S&P, Traydstream and Conpend all assume letters of credit and full document sets, and are priced for banks.
Full competition notes (10 competitors)
Tools that check invoices for trade-based money laundering are mature but built for banks. Pelican, LSEG, Lloyd's List, S&P, Traydstream and Conpend all assume letters of credit and full document sets, and are priced for banks. I found nothing that takes one invoice behind an ordinary B2B payment plus the payer's KYB profile and returns a plausibility score with reasons for a UK or EU EMI. Payments-side document tools like Resistant AI check whether an invoice is forged, not whether the goods fit the business. A new entrant could win with a cheap, fast API sold to EMI compliance teams, plus the fixed-fee 12-month lookback, which is an easy first sale before an FCA visit. The UK EMI focus and a clear match between goods and SIC code are what would set it apart. The main risks are that the price data is available to anyone (UN Comtrade, IHS, PIERS) and that a monitoring vendor EMIs already pay for, or Resistant AI, could add this as a feature. I searched Flagright, Hawk, Sardine, Lucinity and Napier only as a group and got no results, so I haven't confirmed that none of them does this. I also found no FCA or EBA guidance on what regulators expect here, so how much urgency regulators create is unconfirmed.
- Pelican (PelicanSecure TBML)
Uses NLP and machine learning to find TBML in trade documents and to screen vessels and third parties. Sold to banks; a UAE bank is in final-phase deployment.
- Thomson Reuters / LSEG TBML solution
Incumbent bank TBML product covering price checks and dual-use goods screening. Aimed at trade finance desks.
- Lloyd's List Intelligence Seasearcher Trade Risk
Unit price data for 200+ countries, dual-use list screening and vessel and route risk. Could be a data source for Invoice Sense or a direct competitor.
- S&P Global (IHS Markit) TBML solutions
Unit price benchmarks by HS code from official statistics. Also behind the APFF price-check proof of concept for banks.
- Traydstream
London trade document checking platform with compliance rules, integrated into CGI Trade360. Raised $11M in August 2025. Works on bank documentary trade, not EMI payments.
- Conpend
Dutch AI pre-checks of trade documents plus AML and sanctions checks, with bank customers such as Commerzbank.
- Resistant AI
Document forensics used by Verto, a cross-border payments firm. Detects forged invoices but does not check whether the goods fit the business. Has the same customers and could add this check.
- Elliptic over/under-invoicing analytics
Compares declared prices with market values and links them to payment flows. Mainly about crypto settlement.
- DataWalk
Graph analytics platform that can build price-to-market ratios from commodity price indexes. A general-purpose tool, not an invoice API.
- Niva
AI business verification at onboarding. Covers the KYB profile half of the input but not the check on each payment.

Risks
- Many EMIs don't collect invoices at all, so there may be no input to check
- Price reference data (customs and trade statistics) is coarse, which risks false positives
- TBML vendors such as NICE Actimize and ComplyAdvantage can add this feature quickly
- Forged invoices built to look plausible will get past single-document checks
Strong team fit; open space is the weak point (6).
