Haircut Engine: live haircuts and margin calls for bitcoin and stablecoin collateral
Round-the-clock collateral valuation, depeg-aware haircuts and margin-call workflow for banks and brokers accepting crypto collateral.
Competitive · First Korean bank bitcoin-backed loans
Written for: Small startup team
Next step
Call the head of collateral or credit at LMAX Digital and ask how they plan to value and margin RLUSD from Standard Chartered outside banking hours.
Why now
South Korea has its first traditional bank loans backed by bitcoin. Standard Chartered holds RLUSD in custody and plans a collateral link with LMAX. The FSB asked regulators to plan for a stablecoin crisis. The XRP Ledger bug that could have minted about 18 trillion XRP shows why collateral checks need supply and depeg scenarios, not only price feeds.
What became possible
Nothing new technically. The change is institutional: banks are taking bitcoin and stablecoins as collateral, and these markets trade 24/7 while bank margin systems run on business days.
One way in
- Collateral desk API
Values crypto collateral continuously, applies haircuts that rise with volatility, depeg and chain-incident signals, triggers margin calls and keeps an audit trail for supervisors.
- Customer
- Digital-asset lending desks at banks and prime brokers starting crypto-collateral programs
- Model
- Annual license scaled by collateral under management
Competition
Round-the-clock valuation and automated margin calls on crypto collateral are already offered by Anchorage Atlas and Galoy Lana, and Copper ClearLoop and BitGo cover the custody and collateral-movement side, so a generic collateral monitor would compete head-on with them. The opening is a vendor-neutral risk engine that sits above whatever custodian or loan system a bank uses.

It would produce haircuts that move with volatility, stablecoin depeg signals (redemption capacity, reserve quality, liquidity depth) and chain or bridge incidents, instead of fixed loan-to-value tiers. It would also keep a decision log built for bank supervisors that explains why each haircut and margin call happened. Prime brokers already running Cassini or CloudMargin for traditional margin could add it as a module rather than switching platforms. The risk is that this ends up a feature, not a product: Elliptic, Chaos Labs or Credora/RedStone could add bank-grade haircut outputs quickly. A newcomer would need to win on regulator-ready model validation and documentation, and on integrations with traditional collateral systems.
- Anchorage Digital Atlas collateral management
A federally chartered crypto bank's institutional platform. The Block reports it now offers real-time 24/7 collateral monitoring and automated margin calls for institutional lenders, which is the core of the proposed product.
- Galoy Lana
Bitcoin-backed lending platform sold to community and regional banks. Its April 2026 launch announcement claims real-time loan-to-value monitoring, configurable margin-call and liquidation thresholds, borrower notifications, double-entry accounting, approval workflows and custodian integrations (BitGo, Komainu). It runs as a sidecar to the bank's existing core system.
- Copper ClearLoop
Off-exchange settlement and collateral network linking custodians, prime brokers and venues. In 2026 it extended collateral management to OTC derivatives and added lending via FalconX Prime. It is focused on settlement and collateral mobility rather than haircut analytics.
- BitGo
Institutional custodian that markets crypto collateral management and publishes guidance on eligibility, haircuts, segregation and counterparty controls. It is a likely incumbent for banks using it as custodian.
- Credora (RedStone)
Publishes default-probability risk ratings with published methodologies, which custodians and institutional desks can map onto their capital and margin frameworks. It is the closest thing to a third-party provider of haircut signals.
- Elliptic
Blockchain analytics firm publishing material on haircuts and liquidation risk for crypto-backed loans built on on-chain intelligence, plus stablecoin depeg modeling. A plausible entrant into the risk-signal layer.
- Chaos Labs
Simulation-based risk-parameter setting (collateral requirements, liquidation thresholds), mainly for DeFi protocols today. It has the expertise to extend dynamic haircuts to institutional lenders. This description comes from a glossary-style page, not Chaos Labs' own site.
- Cassini Systems / CloudMargin
Margin and collateral software already used by traditional banks and prime brokers, including margin-call automation. I found no crypto-specific features, but either could add crypto collateral support.

Risks
- Bank buyers are slow and favor large vendors; long sales cycles for a three-person team
- Early programs are in Korea and Dubai, which may be far from the team's market
- Custodians and crypto prime brokers already bundle margin tooling
