Double-pledge detection for invoice finance using on-prem multimodal embeddings

Catches the same invoice, or a lightly altered copy, being financed twice across a lender's portfolio, without sending documents to a third-party cloud.

Competitive

Written for: Small startup team

Why now

Iridium Credit just raised $3M for invoice-finance verification, which confirms the problem is budgeted. The open licence makes long-lived embedding indexes safe to build on: vendors cannot deprecate the model out from under you, a point Simon Willison makes directly.

What became possible

EmbeddingGemma 2 maps document images and text into one 768-dimension space. It runs in about 191 MB of RAM under Apache 2.0, and has already been ported to in-browser WebGPU. Near-duplicate search over invoice scans and PDFs can run inside the lender's own environment for almost nothing.

One way in

  1. PledgeCheck

Ingests invoices and purchase orders, embeds image plus text, and flags near-duplicates, altered amounts and re-used templates across clients and time. Optional privacy-preserving hash sharing lets lenders check against each other.

Full competition notes (6 competitors)

Existing registries (MonetaGo, Surecomp, TFM InvoiceCheck) mostly rely on exact hashes or key-field matching and are sold to trade-finance banks. Industry sources say they struggle because too few lenders join and share data. Document-fraud AI vendors (Inscribe, Resistant AI) appear to be cloud services and don't compare across lenders. The opening is image-plus-text near-duplicate detection that runs on the lender's own servers, inside one lender's book (same invoice across clients and over time, altered amounts, reused templates), sold to mid-market factors and asset-based lenders. That sells without a network effect. Lead with this and treat cross-lender hash sharing as optional. Risks: Surecomp already handles fuzzy matches and Inscribe already flags reused templates, so incumbents could close the gap quickly; Lenvi has distribution among factoring customers; and sharing fingerprints of embeddings across lenders while protecting privacy is an unsolved problem.

  • Surecomp Duplicate Invoice Fraud Prevention

SHA256-hashed invoice registry so lenders can compare without disclosing customer data; includes a fuzzy-match resolution workflow and a lender-to-lender communication channel.

  • MonetaGo (with SWIFT)

Shared fingerprint registry for trade documents; flags duplicates when another lender registers the same document. Bank and trade-finance focus.

  • Trade Finance Market InvoiceCheck

Blockchain registry for spotting double-financed invoices; factors enter basic invoice fields for a check in under 30 seconds. Also offers CollateralCheck for warehouse receipts.

  • Lenvi ALVIN

Launched in 2026 for double-pledging; fingerprints loans and alerts on similar ones via data tapes or APIs. Lenvi also sells factoring software; ALVIN's coverage of receivables is unconfirmed.

  • Inscribe

AI document-fraud detection for forged, altered, reused and AI-generated documents, including invoices and templates reused across applications. Cloud SaaS; no evidence of cross-lender matching.

  • Resistant AI

Document-fraud AI aimed at trade finance and factoring; classifies invoices, purchase orders and bills of lading to verify the underlying trade. Cloud-oriented.

Risks

  • Iridium and other verification specialists are already in the market
  • Real double-pledge fraud is often caught by contacting the debtor, so embeddings may be only one signal
  • A shared lookup across lenders needs legal agreements
