Dead-startup data becomes a liquidation asset for AI labs

Brokering, cleaning and valuing code and data from wound-down startups, paid for by AI labs and by bankruptcy trustees.

Competitive · Character.AI Chapter 11, labs buying archives

Written for: Investor or analyst

Next step

Thesis: failed startups' data becomes a regular line in liquidations, and labs become its standing buyers. Confirming signal: the Character.AI court filings put a separate value on user data, or a regulator objects to selling it. Already building: informal deals between founders and lab data teams, as MIT Technology Review describes, with no dedicated broker visible yet.

Why now

MIT Technology Review reports AI labs buying data from dead startups. One founder netted about $25,000 for a wound-down crypto startup's code base, with more pending. In the same week Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 and agreed to sell some assets to Disney for $20M. That is the first big consumer-AI bankruptcy, and it puts the question of what a failed AI company's data is worth in front of a court. Plenty of 2023-2025 AI wrapper startups will wind down over the next 18 months, so supply is coming.

What became possible

Labs are now paying for code bases and archives from shut-down companies as training data. That turns a startup's digital remains into an asset you can sell.

Two ways in

  1. Wind-down data broker

Packages code repos, issue trackers and product logs from closing startups, removes personal data, and auctions them to lab data teams.

  2. Trustee-grade data valuation and consent review

Values a debtor's data, checks what user consent allows to be sold, and produces the paperwork a bankruptcy court needs to approve the sale.

Competition

Competitive

There are risks. Deal volume in formal bankruptcies is lumpy. Hilco, Gordon Brothers or the big law and advisory firms could add this as a service line. And regulation or case law limiting sales of employee communications could shrink the market.

The wind-down broker idea is already taken. SimpleClosure's AssetHub does almost exactly this, with hundreds of listings and lab buyers. Sunset is a direct rival, and Turing, Mercor and HUD now buy straight from founders, so a new generalist broker would be entering late. Brokers are also squeezing prices down to the $10k to $100k range. The trustee-side idea looks more open. Startup brokers serve founders running informal dissolutions, not court-supervised Chapter 7 and Chapter 11 estates. Incumbents like Hilco Streambank know the consumer privacy ombudsman process but have no tooling built for AI training data. The Spirit Airlines sale shows the specific pain: employee and union objections, vendor ownership claims, licensed third-party data the debtor can't transfer, and no standard way to value workspace data. A new entrant could win by becoming the standard expert and diligence provider for trustees, restructuring firms and ombudsmen. That would mean producing a provenance and consent map of what each user, employee and license agreement actually permits; setting valuation benchmarks from comparable lab deals; doing PII and employee-communication redaction that can withstand an objection; and assembling the 363 sale and ombudsman paperwork. There are risks. Deal volume in formal bankruptcies is lumpy. Hilco, Gordon Brothers or the big law and advisory firms could add this as a service line. And regulation or case law limiting sales of employee communications could shrink the market.

  • SimpleClosure AssetHub

This is the wind-down data broker idea, already live. AssetHub launched in April 2026 and sells source code and WorkspaceData (Slack, Jira, email, documents) to frontier labs and RL-environment builders. SimpleClosure handles collection, PII removal and transfer. The company says more than 350 companies have listed and that it expects to return $10M+ to startups in 2026. Forbes and MIT Technology Review report roughly 100 to 150 deals so far, at $10k to $100k each.

  • Sunset

A rival startup wind-down service. Its job listings say it has pivoted into data partnerships, describing itself as a primary source of real business data for frontier AI labs. MIT Technology Review calls its data resale business fast-growing.

  • Turing (Project Lazarus)

A lab data vendor that reportedly buys private repos and internal wikis directly from defunct and winding-down companies. Buyers going straight to founders cut out the broker.

  • Mercor

An RL-environment and data vendor. It reportedly contacts shuttered and recently acquired startups directly to buy or license their code, Slack and Jira archives.

  • HUD AI

Licenses codebases from old or dead startups as AI training data for up to about $10k each, structured as a license rather than a sale.

  • aitrainer.work

A site aimed at closed companies that want to sell their data to AI labs. It lists buyer programs and acts as a seller-side funnel.

  • Hilco Streambank

An established intangible-asset broker for bankruptcies. It has run customer-data sales through consumer privacy ombudsman processes (RadioShack, Bon-Ton, Hastings), so it is the incumbent for trustee-side data sales, though it is not yet focused on AI training data.

  • Spirit Airlines data sale (Bloomberg)

Not a competitor. This shows the trustee-side market is real: AI firms including Google and micro1 bid for Spirit's internal business data in a 363 sale. The sale drew objections from employees, the union and vendors over consent and ownership, which is exactly the review work the second product idea would do.

Risks

  • Consumer-protection authorities have blocked customer-data sales in past bankruptcies, and chatbot logs are especially sensitive
  • Prices like $25,000 per code base may be too small to support a venture-scale broker
  • Labs may come to prefer synthetic data or licensed data from live platforms
  • Reputational backlash if users find their chats were sold
