Clip Finder: local footage search for creators using EmbeddingGemma 2

Desktop app that indexes a creator's raw footage locally and finds moments by description. Editors pay once.

Crowded · Free local video-text embeddings arrive

Written for: Solo builder

Next step

This week, fork or study DigUp, add watched external-drive folders and FCPXML marker export, and index 500GB of your own or public footage to measure speed. Then offer free beta keys in r/editors and r/NewTubers.

Why now

DigUp proves the model works on consumer hardware, but it is a general file search tool, Mac only, with no editing integration. Creators with terabytes on external drives need timeline markers they can drop into Premiere or Resolve. That is a narrow add-on a solo builder can ship on top of an open codebase.

What became possible

EmbeddingGemma 2 puts text, images, audio and video in one embedding space and runs on a Mac. The open-source DigUp app shows 'zebra in a video' jumping to the exact timestamp, with search working in Bengali or Arabic too.

Competition

Crowded

I couldn't confirm whether Final Cut Pro now has its own visual search. If it does, that would squeeze the Mac side further.

Full competition notes (10 competitors)

I found at least seven local footage search apps already on the market, and Jumper, Focus Video Search and ClipScout already sell one-time licenses. On top of that, Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve now include free on-device semantic search, so the basic job of describing a shot and finding it is mostly covered. Using EmbeddingGemma doesn't set you apart, because customers don't care which model is underneath. The opening that's left is narrow. The built-in tools only see media that's been imported into the current project, so there's room for a tool that works across a whole archive. It would watch many external drives, including ones that are unplugged, keep a single catalog across all projects, index overnight, and export timestamped FCPXML or Resolve marker files instead of whole clips. Jumper is the competitor to measure against, so a new entrant would need to clearly beat it on that archive and offline-drive workflow, on accuracy for B-roll descriptions, and on price for solo YouTubers. The podcast idea is weaker still. Cloud auto-clippers like Choppity, OpenClip and Captions already find quotable moments and export finished vertical clips. The only realistic angle there is privacy: local processing for agencies under NDA, or for back catalogs too big to upload. That's a small niche. I couldn't confirm whether Final Cut Pro now has its own visual search. If it does, that would squeeze the Mac side further.

  • Jumper

This is the closest match. It runs locally on Mac and Windows and searches footage by what is in the shot, by keyword or by dialogue in 111 languages. It also does find-similar and plugs into Premiere, Final Cut and Resolve, with Avid in beta. One directory lists a $249 lifetime license alongside a monthly plan, so the pay-once pitch is already taken. That pricing comes from a directory, not from Jumper's own site.

  • Focus Video Search

A standalone Windows and Mac app that indexes video content on your own machine and takes plain-language queries. You drag results into Resolve, Premiere or Final Cut. AlternativeTo lists it as a one-time purchase of roughly $49 to $99.

  • ShotAI

An AI video search and asset management app for Mac and Windows that analyzes and indexes footage on the device. Its listing says it works with the major editing apps.

  • ClipScout

A $59 one-time Premiere Pro extension that works fully offline. You can search footage with text or with a reference image.

  • Edit Mind

A local-first tool from an independent developer. It transcribes footage on the device and analyzes frames for faces, objects, scenes and on-screen text.

  • OpenCut AI

A Product Hunt launch pitched as searching your footage by meaning, 100% on your machine.

  • Clipto

A local, on-device video search app for finding moments in your own videos without uploading them.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro Media Intelligence / Search panel

Built into Premiere. It analyzes clips locally in the background on import, with no internet needed, and finds objects, locations, camera angles and transcript matches from natural-language queries. It has no text recognition (OCR) and only covers media imported into Premiere.

  • DaVinci Resolve 21 IntelliSearch

Built into Resolve 21, released June 2026. It searches dialogue, objects and faces together, but only within media imported into the currently open project.

  • Choppity / OpenClip / Captions.ai and similar podcast clippers

For the podcast idea: a crowded field of cloud tools (Choppity, OpenClip, Captions, Recast Studio, ScreenApp, ClipSpeedAI, HeyGen) that transcribe episodes, score segments for how quotable or viral they are, and export vertical, captioned clips automatically.

Risks

  • Crowded at the high end. Jumper and Adobe already offer visual search inside Premiere
  • Indexing big archives on a laptop is slow
  • DigUp itself may add these features
  • Gemma licence terms need checking before commercial use
