Cancel Proof: agent-run audits of subscription cancellation flows

Browser agents sign up and cancel on a schedule, recording evidence of compliance; subscription merchants and billing platforms pay.

Early · NYC click-to-cancel rule in effect

Written for: Small startup team

Next step

Call the product or compliance lead at Chargebee and ask how many of their merchants have asked about the NYC rule and whether they would embed a monitor or refer merchants to one.

Why now

NYC's click-to-cancel rule is now in effect. Merchants with New York customers need proof that cancelling is as easy as signing up, and checking this by hand across web, app and every plan variant does not scale. Agents that cost cents per run make continuous monitoring cheap.

What became possible

Computer-use agents can now reliably run multi-step signup and cancellation flows. Synthesized software environments such as SoftwareGym are making them more robust. Paired with virtual test cards, they can record step counts, time taken and video of every cancellation path.

Two ways in

  1. Cancel Proof monitor

Weekly agent runs that sign up with a virtual card and then cancel through each channel, recording clicks, screens, retention offers and elapsed time. It flags regressions after each product release and exports an evidence pack.

  2. Billing-platform add-on

Competition

Early

Nobody found clearly sells scheduled, agent-run sign-up-and-cancel tests that work across channels, catch regressions after each release and produce an evidence pack for lawyers. Billing and retention vendors (Chargebee, Churnkey, ProsperStack, Recharge) help merchants build compliant cancel flows but do not test from outside how they actually behave, and Chargebee's own guidance tells merchants to audit by hand.

RenewalSafe may come close with screenshot scanning and evidence storage, but I could not verify it. Law firms do manual reviews, and researchers have shown agent audits work but have not turned them into a product. Demand is plausible because NYC's rule reportedly took effect October 1, 2026, alongside New York State, California and other state cancellation laws, even though the federal FTC rule was struck down. A new entrant can win by being the independent tester, not a flow builder. It would test each release before and after across web, app, phone and chat, map findings to specific NYC and state rule sections, and produce unaltered, repeatable evidence that counsel will trust. The white-label add-on fits billing platforms that already market compliance but lack testing. The risks are that research shows agents can be fooled by manipulative designs and need human checking, phone and chat cancellation are hard to automate, and RenewalSafe or AI testing companies could add the feature. The lasting advantage would have to come from rule coverage and from lawyers trusting the evidence, not from the agent technology itself.

  • RenewalSafe

Closest direct match surfaced: marketed as auto-renewal compliance with screenshot-based flow scanning and time-stamped consent and cancellation evidence storage, plans from $99/month. Could not independently verify the product beyond one search result, and it is unclear whether it actually performs live sign-up and cancel runs.

  • Chargebee Click-to-Cancel Compliance Hub / Retention

Billing platform that markets click-to-cancel compliance features and cancel-flow tooling; its own blog advises merchants to audit cancel flows manually with a test account, which is the job Cancel Proof would automate. A likely partner for the add-on or a competitor if it builds the feature itself.

  • Churnkey

Cancel-flow and retention vendor with click-to-cancel compliance toggles and webhook logging of cancel-button clicks. It builds the flow and does not do external sign-up-and-cancel testing.

  • ProsperStack

Cancel-flow and retention vendor that publishes state auto-renewal compliance guides, including for New York; it is positioned around flow building, not independent auditing.

  • Recharge

Subscription billing platform for Shopify merchants with configurable cancellation flows and regulatory guidance; a candidate customer for the white-label add-on.

  • FlyCode

Visa-partnered Stripe app with subscription compliance docs on dark patterns and cancellation UX, plus agents that watch billing data for subscription-status anomalies. Adjacent: it monitors the billing data, not the screens customers see.

  • AgentHansa subscription exit audit (concept)

A developer blog post pitching human operators who sign up for real subscriptions and produce timestamped evidence packets documenting the exit path. Close in concept but human-run, and I could not verify it as a working service.

  • LLM-agent dark pattern audit research (PETS 2026)

Academic LLM agent that works through consumer-rights request portals on 456 data broker sites, gathering structured evidence and classifying dark patterns. It shows the approach works and warns that agent findings need checking before anyone relies on them.

  • Venable auto-renewal law practice

Law firms already sell manual, lawyer-led auto-renewal compliance reviews of signup and cancellation content; this is the existing paid alternative for in-house counsel.

Risks

  • Today's evidence is a headline only; check the rule's exact requirements and penalties before building
  • Bot detection on signup flows will block agents unless merchants allowlist them
  • Not AI-x-fintech in the narrow sense; less fit with the team's strengths
  • Compliance consultancies and billing platforms may offer manual audits at low cost

Strong buildability; open space is the weak point (5).

What happened next

  • +7d · 19 Oct 2026 nothing yet. No agent-run subscription cancellation audit products, funding rounds, acquisitions, or significant press coverage were found after the October 12, 2026 flag date. While regulatory pressure from NYC and Connecticut rules (both before the flag date) creates market conditions for such a tool, no qualifying events occurred in the week following the flag.
