Break Investigator, now reading Stripe's real-time Postgres sync

A reconciliation agent that compares live Stripe data in Postgres against bank feeds and the ledger. Controllers at Stripe-billed companies pay.

Competitive · Stripe syncs to Postgres in real time

Written for: Small startup team

Next step

Call the controller at a Stripe-billed SaaS company with $10M–$50M in revenue and ask how many hours a week go into tying Stripe payouts to bank deposits, and whether they would turn on Data Pipeline for a 30-day pilot.

Why now

What changed since the original card: the hardest part of the MVP, a reliable and current copy of Stripe data, is now something Stripe provides. An investigator agent becomes a SQL-and-reasoning layer that can ship in weeks. Ramp's $60B round on more than $2B of revenue, and PEX putting its finance workflows into Claude and ChatGPT, show finance teams are buying AI that does real close work. Ramp and PEX cover spend, not revenue-side reconciliation. That gap remains, but it is narrow, and Stripe itself is the obvious threat.

What became possible

Stripe Data Pipeline now syncs Stripe data to Postgres in real time, so an agent can match charges, refunds, payouts and fees against bank and ledger data with plain SQL. No webhook handling or nightly exports.

One way in

  1. Payout break explainer

Every morning it matches each Stripe payout to the bank deposit, splits out fees, refunds, disputes and FX, and writes a plain-language explanation plus a draft journal entry for each mismatch.

Competition

Competitive

The Break Explainer for payment facilitators and neobanks is taken. End Close (YC W2026) is almost the same product, and Ledge, Simetrik, Modern Treasury and SmartStream already sell agent-based exception handling to those buyers.

The Break Explainer for payment facilitators and neobanks is taken. End Close (YC W2026) is almost the same product, and Ledge, Simetrik, Modern Treasury and SmartStream already sell agent-based exception handling to those buyers. The Webhook Gap Monitor looks early to empty as a product: I found no hosted tool (and nothing called 'hookrecon') that checks Stripe/Adyen events against the app database and ledger. Teams build it themselves following Stripe's docs and dev blogs. It's cheap to build and Hookdeck or Stripe could add it, so on its own it's probably a small developer tool. Best way in: sell self-serve to engineering teams at Series A–C companies on Stripe, who are too small for the enterprise reconciliation vendors. Start with the database-vs-Stripe-vs-ledger gap monitor and name the likely cause. Then upsell to explaining breaks and drafting journal entries, possibly as an add-on to existing reconciliation tools rather than a replacement. Avoid selling head-on to payment facilitators and neobanks.

  • End Close (YC W2026)

Almost exactly the Break Explainer pitch. AI agents for payments companies investigate every exception, pull context from connected systems, find the root cause and resolve it. The founder built Modern Treasury's reconciliation team. I found no proof it drafts journal entries.

  • Ledge

AI agents for payment reconciliation, exceptions and the month-end close. Matches payouts, refunds and chargebacks against the general ledger. Unmatched items go to an exception workflow with human approval. Connects to Stripe, Adyen and PayPal.

  • Simetrik

Has an $85M Series B and pages aimed at payment providers, wallets and neobanks. Reconciles fees, refunds, settlements and FX differences. Its agent analyzes exceptions and handles disputes. Offers an MCP connection and a CLI.

  • Modern Treasury

Deterministic matching engine plus AI that suggests matches for exceptions and new matching rules. A human approves each suggestion. Connects to Stripe.

  • SmartStream

Previewed an agent in December 2025 that triages, investigates, resolves and learns from reconciliation exceptions. Aimed at banks.

  • Billow AI

YC-backed AI agents for mid-market finance teams covering month-end close and reconciliation. Next to this space, not focused on payments breaks.

  • Hookdeck

Webhook gateway with durable queuing, replay and bulk retry. I found no feature that compares received events against Stripe's event list to find gaps, but it could easily add one.

Risks

  • Stripe adds reconciliation on top of Data Pipeline
  • Spend platforms such as Ramp extend into revenue reconciliation
  • Crowded field of close-automation startups, so it needs a sharp wedge in Stripe-only setups
  • Data Pipeline pricing may put off smaller customers
