Agent Toll: x402 paywall plugin for WordPress, now that PHP middleware exists

A WordPress plugin that charges AI agents stablecoin micropayments per page or API call. Publishers and small API owners pay.

Crowded · laravel-x402 ships one-line PHP middleware

Written for: Solo builder

Next step

Port the 402-and-verify flow from laravel-x402 into a WordPress plugin that gates /wp-json and RSS, submit it to the WordPress.org directory, and announce it in r/Wordpress and the x402 developer community.

Why now

On the watchlist, the blocker was the unbuilt protocol plumbing in PHP. A working, non-custodial Laravel implementation now exists to learn from. At Sibos, Coinbase described agent payment protocols built with AWS, and Paymentology says issuers are adding controls on what agents may pay for, so the payer side is getting built too. WordPress runs a large share of the web, and we found no equivalent plugin in today's signals. Promote to ready: the build is a port, not research.

What became possible

requestway/laravel-x402 implements x402 v2 as one line of Laravel middleware. Unpaid requests get an HTTP 402, the client signs a stablecoin payment and retries. It is non-custodial and never touches funds. That proves the PHP path that WordPress needs.

Three ways in

  1. Agent Toll for WordPress

Gates /wp-json, RSS and chosen post types for known agent user-agents and unauthenticated API clients. Humans browse free, and agents get a 402 with a price. Settings page for per-route prices and the payout wallet.

    Customer
Niche publishers and documentation sites being scraped by agents
    Model
Free on WordPress.org. $9/month Pro for analytics, per-route pricing and allowlists
  2. WooCommerce feed toll

Charges per call for structured product and price feeds that shopping agents query, while humans keep free access.

    Customer
WooCommerce stores getting high bot traffic
    Model
    Pro add-on, $19/month
  3. Toll analytics

A dashboard showing which agents hit which routes, how many paid, and revenue by route.

    Customer
Any x402 site owner, including Laravel users
    Model
    Hosted SaaS, $5-29/month

Competition

Crowded

A standalone dashboard looks weak because free explorers already exist. Any edge it has would come from reconciling onchain settlements with the seller's own request logs, so revenue shows per endpoint and not just per wallet. It would also need to handle many facilitators and chains reliably. That probably works better as a feature inside the plugin than as a separate product.

Full competition notes (13 competitors)

Both ideas are already built. At least four WordPress plugins on wordpress.org gate content or REST routes behind x402 for agents: P2Flux, NanoTrans, x402 Pay and TransX402. P2Flux already does the exact model of humans reading free, agents paying, and the owner paying a 1 to 3 percent fee. Cloudflare covers the same need at the edge for any site it fronts, with or without WordPress. For the dashboard, x402scan, x402Radar, x402data, g402, x402station and the Pulse substreams already read settlements onchain and break them down by seller, payer and facilitator. What's still open is narrow. All the WordPress plugins are tiny, with single-digit to low-hundreds installs, and none has clearly won. A newcomer could still win on distribution and polish. That would mean working with the hosts and caches WordPress sites actually use, handling full-text RSS and REST feeds well, verifying bot identity (for example with Web Bot Auth) so agents can't just pose as human browsers, and giving clear per-agent reports that a non-crypto publisher can understand, with fiat payouts. Many of these publishers will choose Cloudflare's version simply because it doesn't need a plugin.

  • P2Flux Agent Paywall

WordPress plugin that sells pages, files and API routes to AI agents over x402 (USDC on Base) while people read for free. Takes 1% per request with a 0.003 USDC minimum, or 3% on prepaid balance. Open source at github.com/P2Flux/agent-paywall. Install count is still tiny. This is almost exactly the first product idea.

  • NanoTrans Agent Paywall

WordPress plugin where agents auto-pay USDC on Base through x402, with a MetaMask option for humans. New, with about 172 downloads at listing.

  • x402 Pay

WordPress plugin that gates selected posts with HTTP 402 and supports the Coinbase CDP facilitator on Base mainnet or the x402.org testnet.

  • TransX402 Paywall

WordPress x402 paywall that settles in IDRX rather than USDC. Gates singular views, the REST API, RSS, excerpts and search.

  • TrafficPaywall

WordPress plugin that charges AI crawlers per request with 402 responses. Uses its own API keys and Stripe payouts instead of x402.

  • agent402 tollbooth

npm reverse-proxy tollbooth that lets crawlers pay per request in USDC over x402 or with proof-of-work. It can sit in front of any site.

  • Cloudflare Pay Per Crawl / AI Crawl Control / Monetization Gateway

Edge-level 402 pay-per-crawl with per-crawler allow, charge or block, and Web Bot Auth identity. Secondary reports say a 2026 Monetization Gateway charges for any resource over x402. It works for any site behind Cloudflare, including WordPress.

  • x402scan

Open-source explorer for x402 servers, transaction volumes and facilitators across Base, Solana and other networks.

  • x402Radar

Open-source onchain monitor that tracks USDC transfers through facilitator addresses and aggregates stats by agent, seller and facilitator.

  • x402 Analytics (x402data)

Markets itself as a revenue dashboard for x402 API providers.

  • g402

Managed x402 payment layer with a seller dashboard covering revenue, transactions, success rate and payouts.

  • x402station

x402 analytics and monitoring platform focused on uptime, latency and reliability for x402 endpoints.

  • x402 Pulse substreams

Substreams packages that index x402 settlements on Base and Solana. A related community tool shows revenue per seller wallet once you connect it.

Risks

  • Real agent payment volume is tiny today, so early revenue per site may be pennies
  • Cloudflare's pay-per-crawl and the card networks' agent programs compete for the same toll booth
  • Stablecoin receipts create tax and bookkeeping chores for small site owners
