Agent AP Controls: audit evidence for invoices paid by AI agents

Ties every agent-paid supplier invoice to its PO, approval and mandate. Controllers and SOX auditors at mid-market companies pay.

Next step

Call the head of internal audit at a mid-market Bill customer and ask how they would test the control 'only approved invoices get paid' if an agent pressed the pay button.

Why now

Earlier agent-payment cards were about consumer checkout and chargebacks. This is the first live B2B accounts-payable flow, and AP is under SOX and audit control in a way consumer checkout is not. Once an agent clicks 'pay', auditors need proof of who approved what, under which limit, and that the paid invoice matched the approved one. The networks provide the rails, not this evidence.

What became possible

Agents can now finish B2B invoice payments end to end through supplier portals in a live network pilot. Evervault's Browser Tokens let them do it without seeing card data or passwords, and Mastercard has opened early access to agent payments.

Two ways in

  1. Three-way match with agent receipts

Listens to AP system and card or virtual-card events, matches each agent-initiated payment to the PO, the approval and the agent's mandate or token scope, and flags payments with no matching approval.

Competition

No one I found does the exact job. Every existing evidence source only sees its own part of the chain.

Full competition notes (13 competitors)

No one I found does the exact job. Every existing evidence source only sees its own part of the chain. Ramp, Bill, Melio and AppZen log agent actions inside their own systems. Mandate and card vendors like SatGate, Nevermined, Affinidi and PayHero log the mandate and the payment, but not the PO or the AP approval. SOX tools like DataSnipper, Safebooks and Spendflo test controls in general rather than agent payment events. A neutral layer could win by pulling Bill AP events and card or mandate events from outside vendors together, matching each payment to its PO, approval and agent scope, flagging mismatches, and producing sampling-ready workpapers in the format regional audit firms already use. No standard format for agent payment evidence exists yet (an August 2026 arXiv paper says so, and the related IETF drafts are unfinished), so defining one for mid-market auditors could become the moat. The main threats: SOXAgent already markets nearly this product, Bill or Ramp could ship a good-enough native export, and mid-market companies may not yet have enough agents paying invoices on their own. Today's agents mostly suggest approvals while humans release the money, so demand could arrive later than you'd like.

  • SOXAgent

Closest direct match. Says it checks policy, approvals and separation-of-duties rules before an agent pays, refunds or commits spend, maps agent actions to SOX 404 controls and exports signed, audit-ready evidence packs. Its claims are marketing only; I couldn't verify how mature it is or who uses it.

  • Ramp Bill Pay AP agents

AP agents launched October 2025 that check invoices against vendor records, contracts, POs and approval history, plus an agent that submits card payments. Promises a full audit trail of who approved what and when, but only for activity inside Ramp.

  • Bill (BILL Holdings) AI audit trail

The April–June 2026 update says every AI action appears in a full audit trail and can be overridden. Bill's AI currently assists with human oversight rather than paying invoices on its own. As the system of record for your target customer, it could ship native evidence exports.

  • Melio agentic B2B payment network

Agentic network for US small businesses: agents log into supplier billing systems and pay through the supplier's preferred method, and buyers are promised full auditability.

  • AppZen AP agents

Added eight prebuilt AP agents in April 2026 that turn vendor emails into trackable, auditable requests. A third-party report (Sacra) says the agents can process payments. Enterprise-focused.

  • SatGate

Agent spend-control vendor that sells a signed evidence pack covering agent lifecycle records, spend ledger, denial reasons and revocation proof. It covers the mandate side but not matching to POs or AP approvals.

  • Nevermined card delegation

Virtual cards with spending caps scoped to an agent, instant revocation and exportable audit trails. Covers the payment-rail half of the match.

  • Affinidi agent payments

Issues payment mandates as signed digital credentials that bind agent identity, spending limits, approved recipients and expiry, with real-time revocation. A possible source of mandate data rather than a direct competitor.

  • PayHero

Early product page whose sample log links agent ID, mandate ID, transaction ID and policy version to each decision.

  • Safebooks AI

SOX compliance automation and evidence collection for finance data. Could add a module for agent-paid invoices.

  • DataSnipper

Widely used audit and SOX evidence tool with batch payment matching linked to source documents. Holds the auditor-workpaper side your export idea targets.

  • Spendflo SOX control testing agent

Agent that tests procurement controls and prepares workpapers with evidence linked to each sample item.

  • Kognitos

Finance automation vendor that markets SOX-ready logging and continuous monitoring for AI-touched controls.

Risks

  • Bill or Visa may build the evidence layer into the pilot product itself
  • Pilot volume is tiny today, so buyers may wait
  • Integration with each AP system is real work for 3 people
